The original Prius quickly became one of the most appreciated hybrid cars in the World and their latest model, the 2016 Toyota Prius needs to be better than the original which is no easy thing to do. Toyota hasn’t released too much information about their upcoming 2016 Prius but from what they said so far it seems that the next Prius is not only going to be a better car all around but also more fuel efficient as well as more comfortable than its previous model.
2016 Prius redesign
The exterior of the new 2016 Prius is going to get a complete makeover which will give it a new front fascia as well as a new design scheme. The front of the 2016 Toyota Prius will borrow some cues from the FT-1 concept while the back of the car will be something new and refreshing. Both the front and rear lights will be using LED while the wheels will get 17 inch light alloy rims with low rolling resistance tires which will generate 40% less noise. Inside the car there are going to be changes but not as drastic as on the exterior. It seems that it will borrow a lot of elements from European models such as the Auris or even the Avensis in order to give the best possible feel at its price point without sacrificing the quality of materials.
2016 Toyota Prius specs
Under the hood of the new 2016 Toyota Prius won’t be too noticeable changes to the power delivery of the engine but rather to its fuel efficiency. It seems that Toyota managed to make the 1.8-liter petrol engine around 5% more fuel efficient. This may not seem that much but when you add in another 3% from the smaller and slightly more powerful electric motor as well as another 5% from a brand new lithium ion battery pack, it will add up to as much as 60 MPG on average which is not only good, but better than pretty much any other petrol powered car in the World. We could expect that the base car will only come with the old battery pack, so expect up to 55 MPG on average.
The total power for 2016 Prius is going to be around 140 horsepower with a bit more torque offered in the new version. The gearbox will be the same as before, but this time an all-wheel-drive model might come at a latter date which would give it a nice advantage in bad weather over other hybrid cars.
2016 Prius release date and price
The 2016 Toyota Prius base price is likely going to drop by quite a bit, so expect to pay around $24,000 for a base model and around $29,000 for the model with the new powertrain. The 2016 Prius release date has been announced and we expect the new Toyota hybrid car at the end of 2015.
